Port Angeles Hardwood Mill Project Pleases Everyone
LDesign Project Manager Monty Kurtz has been in the construction industry since he was 15 years old, and has been a member of Batzer's team for the past five years. With a decade of experience behind him, and more than 60 years combined experience among the three superintendents on the job, it is noteworthy that he refers to the Port Angeles Hardwood mill project as one of the best of his career.
"The crews worked hard and things went smooth, from beginning to end," Monty says. "As a result, the project was completed on time, on budget and our customers were satisfied with their building experience."
The project involved 180,000 square feet of structure, along with 240,000 square feet of concrete. The design phase of the project began in November 2004 with an official groundbreaking in March 2005. The mill, which is located on a 30-acre site along the Olympic Peninsula, required a significant amount of site work in order to create level ground on the hillside.
The Port Angeles Hardwood mill has been in full operation since December 2005, specializing in the milling of Red Alder. Owners of the new mill decided to build the facility because of its close proximity to Alder and other hardwoods, and to help boost the deflated economy in Port Angeles. The owners have two other milling operations in Washington, including Cascade Hardwoods in Chehalis and Washington Alder in Mt. Vernon. Along with Alder, these mills manufacture and supply Pacific Coast Maple and Pacific Coast Birch products.
"The job flowed perfectly," Monty insists. "We went from one phase to another without delays of any kind."
